Discussion and critical study of current developments in the field of information science and learning technologies. Through a series of hands-on activities and projects, this course will provide you with the skills and confidence to start creating environments and objects using Blender or a similar modeling program. You will learn to use this modeling program with the intention of using your models for a video game project.
Digital Modeling for Serious Games was a challenging but rewarding experience. Learning Blender for the first time felt overwhelming, but through tutorials, practice, and trial and error, I became more confident. It was fascinating to see how 3D modeling applies to learning, games, animated films, and even architecture. Starting with modeling a real life archery range helped me understand basic shapes and meshes, and later working on a Blade Runner film inspired environment pushed me to explore materials, textures, and UV mapping. One of my favorite projects was designing a detailed 3D saloon where I used Blender modifiers to refine objects and create realistic textures for wood, glass, and metal. Seeing my progress from basic models to a full environment was a great achievement.
One of the most exciting parts was learning animation. For my final project, I built a backgammon board and figured out how to animate rolling dice, incorporating object mode and keyframe animation. This course helped me see how 3D modeling can enhance training and education by making learning more engaging. I now understand the potential for immersive environments in corporate training, moving beyond traditional methods. It also taught me the importance of persistence. When I got stuck, I had to push through, find solutions, and keep learning. Figuring things out on my own and not giving up, even when something felt impossible, was one of the most valuable lessons I took away from this experience.
